Jito President: Perpetual Futures Are Trojan Horse for TradFi On-Chain, SpaceX Is Solana's Battleground

Brian Smith, president of the Jito Foundation, argues that perpetual futures — known as perps — are a trojan horse to bring all of traditional finance onchain. He also says SpaceX is a battleground Solana must win.

The perps argument

Smith sees perpetual futures as more than just another crypto derivative. In his view, they are the entry point for traditional financial institutions to move their operations onto blockchain rails. Perps allow traders to speculate on asset prices without an expiry date, a structure that mirrors many traditional finance products. Smith believes that once TradFi players start using perps onchain, they will eventually bring their entire suite of services — lending, custody, settlement — into the ecosystem.

Why SpaceX matters

SpaceX is not just a high-profile company; Smith frames it as a critical test for Solana. Winning SpaceX as a user or partner would signal that Solana can handle the scale and reliability demanded by a global aerospace firm. It would also open the door for other major enterprises to follow. Smith's comments suggest that Solana's future growth depends on landing such marquee clients.

The Jito Foundation, which Smith leads, is focused on building infrastructure on Solana. The foundation's work includes liquid staking and other DeFi tools. Smith's remarks come as Solana competes with other blockchains for institutional adoption.

Neither the Jito Foundation nor SpaceX has commented further on Smith's statements. The crypto community is watching to see whether Solana can convert this battleground into a win.
