Kraken Prop Goes Live: Crypto Exchange Launches Integrated Funded Trading

Kraken launched Kraken Prop this week, a funded trading product built directly into Kraken Pro. It lets experienced traders access larger buying power with exchange capital, after passing a paid evaluation. Kraken is the only major crypto exchange to offer an integrated prop trading option, a move that could reshape how retail traders tap into leverage and profit splits.

How the evaluation works

Traders pick an account tier — ranging from $5,000 to $200,000 — pay a fee starting at $20, and then trade in a simulated environment using live market prices. To unlock a funded account, they must hit a profit target while staying inside a 3% maximum daily loss and an overall drawdown limit. The evaluation is rigorous; most applicants fail on their first attempt. Once qualified, the profit target disappears, and traders get to keep 80% of eligible profits by default, with an option to upgrade to a 90/10 split in their favor.

Payouts and leverage

Kraken Prop supports up to 5x leverage on BTC and ETH, and covers more than 60 crypto pairs. Payouts are processed typically within 24 hours. The evaluation fee is non-refundable once trading begins — so there's no backing out after the first click. Funded accounts are backed by Kraken's own capital, not third-party liquidity.

Common ways traders blow it

Kraken's internal data points to three main failure modes: taking oversized positions, trading without a plan during volatile conditions, and pushing harder after a drawdown. The 3% daily loss limit is tight by design — one bad swing can end a run. The product is aimed at traders who can show discipline in a simulated setting before getting real capital.

Kraken has been around since 2011, processing over $2 trillion in total volume. It holds ISO/IEC 27001:2022, SOC 2 Type I, and a MiCA licence — certifications that lend credibility to a product where traders hand over a fee upfront. The integration into Kraken Pro means no third-party platform hopping; everything lives inside one exchange account.

Whether the evaluation's failure rate will turn off mainstream users remains open. But for now, Kraken Prop gives serious retail traders a direct path to funded trading without leaving the exchange. The next concrete step: watch how quickly the first cohort of funded traders gets paid out — and how many come back for a second attempt after failing.
