Lido DAO's native token LDO tumbled 16% on Wednesday, its biggest single-day drop in months, after a new Ethereum staking proposal reignited worries about the liquid staking protocol's outsized market share. The sell-off came as traders piled into leveraged positions, amplifying the move.
Ethereum staking proposal sparks sell-off
The catalyst was a draft proposal from Ethereum core developers that would introduce a mechanism to cap the amount of ETH any single staking provider can control. While still in early discussion, the proposal revived long-standing concerns that Lido's dominance — it accounts for roughly one-third of all staked ETH — could face regulatory or protocol-level constraints. Lido DAO token holders reacted swiftly, dumping LDO as the news spread across crypto Twitter and Telegram channels.
Leveraged traders increase exposure
Data from on-chain derivatives platforms showed a sharp uptick in leveraged long positions on LDO during the price drop. The move suggests some traders bet on a quick rebound, though the elevated leverage also raises the risk of cascading liquidations if the price continues to fall. The funding rate for LDO perpetual swaps turned negative briefly before stabilizing, indicating bearish sentiment among some market participants.
The Ethereum proposal is far from finalized — it's still in the research phase and would require broad community consensus. But the market's reaction shows how sensitive Lido's valuation is to any perceived threat to its staking dominance. Lido DAO contributors have not yet issued a formal response. The next Ethereum All Core Developers call, scheduled for next week, could provide more clarity on the proposal's trajectory.
