LMAX is exploring a sale or an initial public offering, hiring Morgan Stanley and KBW to run the process. The company could fetch a valuation of up to $5 billion. The move underscores a broader consolidation wave in institutional crypto infrastructure, where liquidity, custody, and credit are all concentrating around a few key players.
LMAX's dual-track process
LMAX runs an exchange-style central limit order book and a separate digital venue. The dual-track approach — selling to a strategic buyer or going public — gives the firm flexibility. A $5 billion valuation would put it among the most valuable private crypto infrastructure companies. No timeline has been set for a decision.
The Standard Chartered pilot
On July 1, LMAX and Standard Chartered completed a pilot of bank-intermediated prime brokerage trades in bitcoin and ether with T+1 settlement. The test is part of a broader push to bring traditional prime brokerage models into crypto — credit, settlement, and custody all wrapped into one service. If it scales, it could pull more institutional volume onto LMAX's books and open the door for more traditional financial institutions to trade crypto through a regulated prime brokerage.
Consolidation across the board
Institutional crypto is tightening. Liquidity is concentrating on a few neutral matching engines and market makers. Custody is hardening around a small set of regulated providers. Credit and settlement are moving into prime brokerage models. SBI's agreement to acquire bitbank in Japan, expected to close in October, is another sign. Kraken's parent company recently explored taking a minority stake in Aave, though the founder pushed back publicly. The message is clear: the infrastructure layer is shrinking to a few big players that can offer the full stack — execution, custody, and credit.
For LMAX, the next concrete milestone is whether a buyer emerges or the IPO roadshow begins. For SBI, the bitbank deal is set to close in October. The consolidation trend shows no signs of slowing — the firms that survive will be the ones that can offer the full stack: execution, custody, and credit.
