Michael Saylor's Strategy sold another 32 Bitcoin this week — worth about $2.5 million — marking only the second time the company has ever parted with its flagship crypto holding. The sale was disclosed in an 8-K filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on Wednesday.
The news didn't sit well with shareholders. MSTR stock fell 6% on the day of the announcement, adding to a more than 22% decline over the past month.
A rare sell signal
Strategy built its reputation — and its stock premium — on a relentless Bitcoin accumulation strategy. Selling is unusual. The company's only previous Bitcoin sale came last quarter, when it offloaded a small tranche to cover corporate expenses. This time the filing didn't specify the reason for the sale, but the amount is tiny relative to the company's overall hoard of over 250,000 Bitcoin.
Still, the second sell-off in as many quarters raises eyebrows. For a firm that has positioned itself as a pure-play Bitcoin proxy, any reduction in the stack can spook investors who view MSTR as a leveraged bet on BTC appreciation.
Stock under pressure
The 6% drop on Wednesday was part of a broader sell-off that has wiped out more than a fifth of the company's market value in the last four weeks. The timing isn't great. Strategy's share price has been closely correlated with Bitcoin's own price swings, and the broader crypto market has been choppy through May and into early June.
The SEC filing didn't offer much comfort. It disclosed the sale mechanically — date, amount, dollar value — but didn't explain whether this is a one-off treasury management move or the start of a new pattern.
Investors will be watching Strategy's next move closely. The company still holds the vast majority of its Bitcoin, and Saylor has repeatedly said he has no intention of becoming a net seller. But the second sale introduces doubt where there was none before. The next quarterly filing or a public statement from the company could clarify whether this is just routine cash management — or something more.
