Numerai, the decentralized hedge fund powered by crowdsourced machine learning, has completed its third strategic buyback of Numeraire (NMR) tokens. The fund acquired $1.2 million worth of NMR from the open market through Coinbase Institutional, bringing total buybacks over the past year to $3.2 million. The repurchase was executed over several weeks at the bid price to minimize market impact, and — unlike the previous two buybacks — was finished before the announcement.
A third buyback, done quietly
This latest buyback follows two earlier rounds that Numerai didn't disclose until after completion. The fund said the strategy is to reduce the circulating supply of NMR while signaling confidence in its own platform. With about 3.1 million NMR still in the treasury after this purchase, Numerai holds a significant chunk of the fixed-supply token, which is capped at 11 million.
Assets under management climb to $700M
Numerai's assets under management have grown to roughly $700 million, up from $560 million at the end of 2025. That's a 25% increase in about seven months. The fund also said active accounts on its platform have more than doubled over the past year, though it didn't give a specific number. The growth comes as Numerai rolls out new infrastructure aimed at making it easier for data scientists to participate.
New features: Skills, MCP, and Atomic Staking
Alongside the buyback, Numerai introduced three new pieces of infrastructure: Numerai Skills, a system for rating and verifying model contributors; Numerai Model Context Protocol (MCP), a standardized way for models to interact with the platform; and Atomic Blockchain Staking, which lets users stake NMR directly on the blockchain without intermediaries. The additions are meant to lower the barrier for new participants and improve the quality of the crowdsourced models that drive the fund's trading.
With 3.1 million NMR still in its treasury, Numerai has room for more buybacks if it chooses. The fund hasn't said whether a fourth round is planned, but the pattern so far suggests it may continue to repurchase tokens as long as market conditions allow. For now, the focus is on growing the platform's user base and AUM — and keeping the buyback strategy quiet until the deal is done.
