Ondo Finance Launches ONDO Network for Real-World Assets, Hybrid Model Raises Security Questions

Ondo Finance this week launched the ONDO Network, an evolution of its planned blockchain for real-world assets (RWAs). The network uses a hybrid model that combines on-chain smart contracts with off-chain components — a design choice that immediately raises security concerns because of its reliance on secure hardware enclaves.

How the hybrid model works

The ONDO Network isn't a pure on-chain blockchain. Instead, it splits operations between public ledger transactions and off-chain processing inside trusted execution environments — essentially secure hardware enclaves. That means some critical logic runs outside the transparent, decentralized layer that most crypto users expect.

Ondo says the hybrid approach lets the network handle the scale and compliance requirements that RWAs demand. But it also introduces a trust assumption: users have to believe the hardware enclaves are properly secured and not compromised.

Security concerns around hardware enclaves

Hardware enclaves — like Intel SGX or AMD SEV — have a mixed track record. Researchers have demonstrated side-channel attacks and other exploits against them in the past. By relying on these enclaves, the ONDO Network creates a potential single point of failure that a pure on-chain system would avoid.

Ondo hasn't disclosed which specific enclave technology it's using or how it plans to mitigate known vulnerabilities. That lack of detail is likely to draw scrutiny from security auditors and potential institutional partners.

What this means for the RWA sector

The launch comes as the tokenized real-world asset market continues to grow, with projects racing to bring everything from Treasury bills to real estate on-chain. Ondo's choice of a hybrid model reflects a broader tension in the space: pure on-chain solutions struggle with privacy and regulatory compliance, while off-chain fixes reintroduce the very intermediaries crypto was supposed to eliminate.

For now, the ONDO Network is live. Whether institutions will trust its hardware-enclave security model — and whether Ondo can prove the enclaves are hardened enough — remains an open question.
