Pi Coin Jumps 8% as Pi Network Sets August 11 Deadline for Node Upgrade

Pi Coin rose 8% on Saturday to $0.0870, landing on CoinGecko's trending list as the Pi Network gave node operators a hard deadline: install Protocol v26 by August 11 or get cut off. The upgrade is the second-to-last planned update before the final Protocol v27, and it brings improvements to smart contract safety, data storage, and cross-chain communication.

Who needs to act — and what happens if they don't

Only node operators are affected. Mobile miners can keep going without doing anything. If a node operator misses the August 11 cutoff, they'll be disconnected from the network. The Pi Core Team hasn't said whether reconnection will be possible later, so the pressure is on for the roughly 200,000 active nodes.

What Protocol v26 actually changes

The update focuses on three areas: smarter contract security (fewer vulnerabilities in dApps), more efficient data storage (lower node hardware requirements), and better cross-chain communication — a step toward interoperability with other blockchains. The Pi Core Team has described v26 as a major infrastructure piece before the final v27, which is expected to complete the transition to a fully decentralized mainnet.

Price action and the unlock overhang

Saturday's 8% gain is a bright spot in an otherwise rough stretch. PI is down 25% over the past month and 79% below its price a year ago. It hit an all-time low of $0.0710 on July 14. The market cap sits at about $957 million, ranking 67th among cryptocurrencies, with 24-hour trading volume of just $8.6 million. That low liquidity makes the price sensitive to any news — but also to selling pressure. Roughly 1.71 billion PI tokens are scheduled to unlock over the next year, a supply overhang that has weighed on sentiment.

Previous upgrades and the pattern

This isn't the first time a protocol update has sparked a rally. Protocol v25 on July 22 and Protocol v24 in June both triggered temporary price jumps that quickly reversed. The question is whether v26 will be different. The deadline is tight, and the unlock schedule hasn't changed. For now, the market is watching whether node operators comply — and whether the upgrade can sustain momentum beyond a single weekend.

The next concrete milestone is August 11, when the Pi Core Team will enforce the cutoff. After that, all eyes turn to Protocol v27, the final planned upgrade, though no date has been set yet.
