Pi Network has begun rolling out Protocol 26, the ninth protocol upgrade, and set an August 11 deadline for node operators to update or lose their connection to the Mainnet. The migration is described as straightforward, typically taking under five minutes, though restarts may take longer in rare cases. Protocol 27 will follow to close the current sequence, bringing the Mainnet up to date with the latest protocol features.
Price reaction: a familiar pattern
PI rose 6.66% to $0.0822 over 24 hours following the upgrade announcement, outperforming the broader crypto market's 0.71% gain. But the rally looks fragile. PI is down 11.7% over the past seven days and 29% over the past 30 days. Earlier upgrades produced a similar pattern: brief price spikes followed by fading rallies. Protocol 25 was activated on July 22, and PI briefly reached $0.103 before losing the $0.10 level.
The unlock schedule
PiScan data shows approximately 4.25 million PI unlocking daily, with about 1.71 billion scheduled to enter circulation over 12 months. That steady supply pressure helps explain why rallies tend to fizzle. The August 11 deadline provides a dated catalyst, but prior deadlines resulted in short bounces rather than a durable trend.
Node operators have until August 11 to complete the update. Protocol 27 will then close the current sequence. Whether this upgrade cycle can break the pattern of short-lived rallies remains an open question — the unlock schedule isn't going away.
