PowerCompute Refinances $18M Debt With Bitcoin-Backed Loan at 2%

Nasdaq-listed PowerCompute has refinanced $18 million of its existing debt through a Bitcoin-backed loan, securing an initial interest rate of roughly 2%. The move, disclosed this week, marks one of the larger corporate uses of crypto as collateral by a publicly traded company outside the crypto sector itself.

The loan terms

The loan is secured by Bitcoin, though PowerCompute didn't specify how much BTC was pledged or who the lender was. The 2% rate is well below what most corporate borrowers would get on unsecured debt today — especially for a company that needed to refinance. The structure suggests the lender valued the Bitcoin collateral heavily, or that PowerCompute put up a significant overcollateralization.

Why PowerCompute did it

PowerCompute didn't say what the original debt was for, but refinancing at a lower rate frees up cash flow. For a Nasdaq-listed firm, taking a Bitcoin-backed loan is still unusual. Most public companies that hold crypto do so on their balance sheet, not as pledged collateral. This deal shows the lending market for Bitcoin has matured enough to attract a regulated borrower.

Bitcoin-backed lending grows up

Bitcoin-backed loans have been around for years, but they've mostly been used by crypto-native firms or high-net-worth individuals. A Nasdaq-listed company using one to refinance existing debt is a step toward mainstream adoption. The 2% rate also highlights how cheap crypto-collateralized borrowing can be when the lender trusts the asset's liquidity and price stability — at least in the short term.

PowerCompute now carries a Bitcoin-linked liability. If BTC's price drops sharply, the loan could face a margin call. But for now, the company has locked in a low rate and swapped out whatever more expensive debt it had before.
