Robinhood Closes WonderFi Acquisition, Enters Canadian Crypto Market

Robinhood closed its acquisition of WonderFi on June 1, 2026, formally planting its flag in Canada's regulated crypto space. The deal, which had been in the works for months, gives Robinhood control of Bitbuy and Coinsquare—two of the country's longest-standing regulated exchanges. With the acquisition, Robinhood's total international funded customer base topped 1 million for the first time.

The Canadian foothold

WonderFi brings roughly 300,000 funded customers into Robinhood's ecosystem. The company already had a presence in Canada: Robinhood established an engineering hub in Toronto back in 2024, and now employs over 240 people in the country. That office will serve as the Canadian headquarters going forward.

Johann Kerbrat, SVP and General Manager of Robinhood Crypto and International, said WonderFi's experience with regulated platforms made it an ideal partner. He didn't offer specifics on integration timelines, but the move fits a broader pattern—Robinhood has been acquiring regulated local infrastructure rather than trying to expand through gray-area methods.

What users get

Canadian customers on the Robinhood app will see a flat 0.5% fee per CAD trade. Robinhood says that's lower than existing market rates at most domestic platforms, though it didn't name competitors. For Bitbuy and Coinsquare users, the transition means access to Robinhood's broader product suite, likely rolling out in stages.

Institutional ties

WonderFi's institutional relationships in Canada aren't going anywhere. Robinhood will maintain them alongside its own institutional business, which grew after the 2023 acquisition of Bitstamp. That gives Robinhood a dual lane—retail through WonderFi's exchanges and institutional through Bitstamp and the inherited Canadian relationships.

It's a quiet but deliberate expansion. Robinhood didn't announce a splashy new app for Canada; it bought the infrastructure and customers outright. The integration work starts now, and the 0.5% fee structure will soon be live for Canadians using Robinhood's app.
