Sygnum Bank, the Zurich-based crypto bank, has plugged its regulated digital asset services into Bancastato's online banking platform. Starting this week, clients in Switzerland's Ticino region can buy, hold, and sell bitcoin, ether, litecoin, and solana without opening a separate exchange account. The move brings crypto into the everyday banking experience for a regional customer base.
How the integration works
Bancastato's online banking system now connects directly to Sygnum's custody and trading infrastructure. That means a client in Ticino logs into their regular bank account, sees a crypto section, and can trade from there. No second app, no separate login, no extra KYC process. Sygnum handles the regulated side — custody, settlement, compliance — while Bancastato provides the front-end and customer relationship.
The four assets on offer
For now, the service covers four cryptocurrencies: bitcoin, ether, litecoin, and solana. That's a narrow list compared to what a dedicated exchange might offer, but it covers the most liquid coins. Sygnum didn't say whether it plans to add more assets later. The selection likely reflects what the bank's institutional clients trade most often.
Why Ticino
Bancastato serves the Italian-speaking canton of Ticino, a region with a strong local banking tradition. Sygnum chose to launch the integration with a regional bank rather than a national giant. That's a deliberate bet: start small, prove the model, then maybe expand. The bank hasn't announced any plans to roll out similar integrations with other Swiss banks.
What this means for users
The biggest change is convenience. Until now, a Bancastato client who wanted crypto had to open an account with an exchange, transfer money, and manage a separate wallet. Now they can do it all inside their bank. Sygnum's regulated status also means the crypto holdings fall under the same Swiss banking safeguards as fiat deposits — at least on the custody side. The trade-off is limited asset choice and likely higher fees than a pure exchange, though Sygnum hasn't published pricing for this specific integration.
The service is live now for Bancastato clients in Ticino. Sygnum hasn't said whether it will expand to other cantons or add more digital assets. For now, it's a small but concrete step toward embedding crypto into traditional banking.
