TaoWeave Sells TAO to Cover Costs, Posts $114K Loss

TaoWeave sold 3,959.23 TAO during the first half of the year to fund operating expenses and manage liquidity. The sale raised $1.172 million but produced a net realized loss of $114,000, according to the company's Aug. 7 quarterly filing.

The move marks a turn from the plan to accumulate TAO from a $7.5 million private placement. Instead, the company is now selling tokens to keep operations running.

Why the sale happened

TaoWeave has no committed credit facility and holds no other digital assets. That leaves TAO as the only source of cash beyond its bank balance. During the first half, the company burned $1.189 million in net operating cash, leaving $735,000 in cash at June 30.

Management said it expects to sell more TAO from time to time as operating needs require. The company did not hedge its TAO exposure, so every sale is subject to market prices.

The staked holdings

At June 30, TaoWeave held 23,335.18 TAO, worth $4.709 million. That represented about 69.5% of its $6.776 million total assets. All of the tokens were staked through custodians BitGo and Kraken.

Staking generated 728.97 TAO and $191,000 in revenue during the first half. The company also bought 1,900 TAO, but the sale left its balance down 1,330.26 TAO, a 5.4% drop from year-end. TAO traded near $198 on Aug. 8.

The math on future sales

Management ran a sensitivity analysis. If operating cash burn continues at the same pace, roughly 8,298 TAO would be needed over the next 12 months. That would leave about 15,037 TAO, or 64.5% of the June balance, before staking rewards.

The company says cash plus TAO converted to cash should fund operations for at least a year. But it also acknowledges that more capital will be needed long-term.

What to watch next

The next quarterly report will show whether TaoWeave sold more TAO and at what price. If the token holds near $198, the current stash covers a while. If the price drops, the company will have to sell more tokens to cover the same costs.

That's the open question: how long can TaoWeave keep selling TAO before it runs low on its only liquid asset.
