Telegram is putting a crypto wallet directly into its app — and it's non-custodial. Founder Pavel Durov announced this week that the messaging platform will build a native Gram wallet into every Telegram client, rolling out to more than a billion users. Durov called it 'the largest rollout of a non-custodial crypto wallet in human history.'
Durov's summer plan
The wallet will be built directly into Telegram this summer, Durov said. That means every user — from casual chatters to power users — will get a self-custodial Gram wallet without needing to download a separate app or browser extension. The move turns Telegram into a distribution channel for self-custody at a scale no crypto company has attempted before.
Self-custody at scale
Non-custodial means users hold their own private keys. Telegram won't have access to the funds. That's a big departure from the exchange-hosted wallets most people use. For the billion-plus people on Telegram, it could be their first experience holding crypto directly — no middleman, no withdrawal limits, no counterparty risk. The trade-off: if you lose your keys, you lose your coins. Telegram hasn't detailed recovery options yet.
Gram's new home
The wallet is built for Gram, Telegram's own token. Gram has had a rocky history — the SEC sued Telegram in 2019 over its initial Gram sale, and the project eventually settled. But Durov has kept the token alive, and this wallet gives it a built-in user base. Whether the wallet will support other cryptocurrencies down the line isn't clear from the announcement.
What users can expect
Durov didn't give a specific date, just 'this summer.' That's a tight window. Telegram has a history of shipping features fast, but a non-custodial wallet for a billion people is a different kind of engineering challenge. The company will need to handle key generation, backup, and user education at a scale that's never been done. The rollout is expected to begin in the coming weeks. Whether it will include support for other tokens beyond Gram remains unclear.
