Tether Launches Visa Card for Tokenized Gold With Crypto Rewards

Tether has launched a Visa card that lets users spend its tokenized gold stablecoin and earn crypto rewards on every purchase. The card is tied directly to Tether's gold-backed token, meaning holders can use their digital gold anywhere Visa is accepted. It's a real-world payments play for a token that until now mostly sat in wallets or traded on exchanges.

How the card works

The card draws from a user's balance of Tether's tokenized gold. When you swipe or tap, the equivalent amount of gold tokens gets converted and settled through Visa's network. Tether says the card also pays out rewards in cryptocurrency on each transaction — though it hasn't disclosed the reward token or the rate. The card is available now to holders who already have a wallet with the gold token.

Tether first issued its gold-backed token back in 2020, pegging it to the price of one fine troy ounce of gold. For years the token's main use was as a store of value or a trading pair. A Visa card changes that. It turns a static asset into something you can spend at a coffee shop, a grocery store, or an online retailer. That's a meaningful step for gold-backed stablecoins, which have struggled to find day-to-day utility beyond the trading desk.

The rewards angle

Crypto debit cards have been around for a while — several exchanges and fintechs already offer cards that spend Bitcoin, Ether, or USDC. What sets Tether's card apart is the gold backing. The rewards program adds an extra incentive to load up the card and use it for regular spending. Without details on the reward percentage or token, it's hard to say how competitive it is. But for a holder of tokenized gold, the card removes the friction of converting to fiat first.

The card is rolling out immediately. Holders can apply through Tether's website and link their gold token wallet. There's no word yet on whether the card will eventually support other Tether tokens like USDT — for now, it's gold only.
