What the money will build

The funding is earmarked for a decentralized data network that collects and shares spatial information — the kind of location, depth, and movement data that robots and autonomous systems need to operate in dynamic environments. Instead of relying on a single central database, the network would distribute data across many nodes, making it more resilient and accessible.

Vangrid's pitch is that physical AI — systems that interact with the physical world, not just text or images — has been starved of good spatial data. A robot that can navigate a warehouse or a drone that can map a battlefield needs up-to-date, high-resolution information about its surroundings. That data is often siloed, expensive, or inconsistent. The company wants to fix that by creating a shared, token-incentivized marketplace for spatial information.

Why spatial data matters for robotics and defense

Robotics and defense are two sectors where the gap between AI's digital capabilities and its physical performance is most obvious. A factory robot can nail a repetitive task, but throw it into an unfamiliar space and it stumbles. Defense systems face similar problems — they need to react to terrain, obstacles, and moving targets in real time. A decentralized spatial data network could give these systems a constant stream of fresh, verified environmental data.
