Vanguard Adds $8M to MicroStrategy Stake, Boosting Bitcoin Proxy Exposure

Vanguard Group increased its stake in MicroStrategy by $8 million this month, bringing its total holdings in the Bitcoin proxy company to $209 million. The investment was made through Vanguard's Mid-Cap Value ETF, which added 83,093 shares. MicroStrategy is known for holding a massive Bitcoin treasury, making its stock a popular way for traditional investors to get indirect crypto exposure.

The ETF's growing bet

Vanguard's Mid-Cap Value ETF now holds roughly $209 million worth of MicroStrategy shares. The $8 million addition is a modest increase relative to the total, but it signals continued institutional appetite for the stock. The ETF targets mid-cap value companies, and MicroStrategy fits that bill — even if its value is increasingly tied to Bitcoin's price swings.

Why MicroStrategy?

MicroStrategy holds more than 200,000 Bitcoin on its balance sheet, making its share price highly correlated with the cryptocurrency. For investors who can't or won't buy Bitcoin directly — whether due to custody concerns, regulatory hurdles, or fund mandates — MicroStrategy offers a workaround. Vanguard's ETF investors now have that exposure, even if they didn't specifically ask for it.

The move is a reminder that Bitcoin exposure can creep into traditional portfolios through the back door. Vanguard has historically been cautious on crypto, but its value ETF's stake in MicroStrategy is a passive bet on the company's fundamentals — which happen to be tied to Bitcoin. For index fund holders, it's indirect exposure without the need to open a crypto exchange account.

The $8 million addition is small relative to Vanguard's $8 trillion in assets under management. But it's a concrete data point showing that institutional money continues to flow into Bitcoin-adjacent equities, even as the crypto market matures.

MicroStrategy's next quarterly filing will reveal whether Vanguard or other large funds adjust their positions further. For now, the ETF's stake sits at $209 million — a number that will move with Bitcoin's price.
