Wintermute, a leading crypto market maker, has expanded into prediction markets. The firm is now providing liquidity on Kalshi and Polymarket, two platforms where users trade event contracts — think election outcomes, Fed decisions, or sports results. Wintermute says the move aims to enhance execution depth and tighten spreads for traders on those venues.
Wintermute's latest expansion
This isn't Wintermute's first step outside the spot-crypto corridor. The firm already operates in derivatives and decentralized finance. But prediction markets represent a newer frontier — one that combines regulatory scrutiny with fast-growing retail demand. By joining Kalshi, a CFTC-regulated exchange, and Polymarket, a crypto-native platform, Wintermute is betting on both worlds.
The company didn't disclose the size of its commitment or the number of contracts it's quoting. But market makers typically allocate capital based on expected volume. Kalshi and Polymarket have both seen surges in activity this year, tied to the U.S. midterm cycle and other high-profile events.
What it brings to prediction markets
Liquidity on prediction markets can be thin. A single large order often moves the price. Wintermute's entry should narrow bid-ask spreads and allow users to trade bigger sizes without slippage. For casual bettors and institutional players alike, that matters.
The firm's algo-driven approach also means faster quoting. Polymarket, which runs on Polygon, relies on automated market makers for much of its activity. Wintermute's presence could complement that, especially for contracts with longer durations or lower volume.
Wintermute's move signals that prediction markets are no longer a niche. They're drawing serious infrastructure players. Kalshi's regulated status gives it a clear runway in the U.S., while Polymarket has built a loyal user base despite occasional regulatory headaches. By placing itself in both, Wintermute hedges its bets — literally.
The expansion also fits a pattern: crypto market makers are diversifying revenue streams. Spread compression in spot and perpetuals has squeezed margins. Prediction trading fees, often higher than standard crypto pairs, offer a fresh source of income.
For now, Wintermute hasn't said whether it plans to add other prediction platforms. The firm is still assessing market reaction. If volumes keep climbing, more competitors could follow.
