Wintermute, the crypto trading firm operating a $10 billion network, has launched Armitage, a platform that applies institutional-grade trading and risk management to decentralized lending markets. The first USDC-denominated vaults are now live on the Morpho protocol, marking the company's push into DeFi lending.
What Armitage Does
Armitage functions as a vault curation platform. Instead of users manually picking lending pools or strategies, the platform bundles institutional risk controls—like position sizing, collateral monitoring, and automated liquidation management—into curated vaults. The initial vaults are denominated in USDC, the stablecoin, and operate on Morpho, a decentralized lending protocol that matches borrowers and lenders directly.
Wintermute's Shift From Trading to Lending
Wintermute has built its reputation on high-volume, algorithmic trading across centralized and decentralized exchanges. With Armitage, it’s bringing that same discipline to lending. The company says the platform targets institutions that want exposure to DeFi yields but need the guardrails typical of traditional finance. The vaults are designed to reduce the operational burden of managing lending positions—things like rebalancing, tracking liquidation thresholds, and adjusting exposure as market conditions change.
Why Morpho
Morpho is a non-custodial lending protocol that sits on top of existing money markets like Compound and Aave, optimizing rates through peer-to-peer matching. Wintermute chose Morpho as the first deployment for Armitage vaults. The protocol's architecture allows for more flexible risk parameters, which fits the institutional vault model Armitage is building.
The move signals a broader trend: trading firms using their infrastructure to capture fee income from lending, not just trading spreads. Wintermute’s $10 billion network gives it access to deep liquidity, which could help Armitage vaults scale quickly—assuming the market for curated DeFi lending grows.
No timeline has been given for additional vaults or protocols. For now, the only live vaults are the USDC ones on Morpho.
