The World Foundation has raised $52.5 million through a strategic sale of its native WLD token, the organization announced on July 24. The round was led by Pantera Capital, with participation from Bain Capital Crypto, Eightco Holdings, Selini Capital, and Susquehanna Crypto. Proceeds are earmarked for expanding Global World ID — the foundation's decentralized identity protocol — to new regions and use cases.
The investor lineup
Pantera Capital, a venture firm with a long crypto track record, anchored the raise. It's joined by Bain Capital Crypto, the digital-asset arm of the Boston-based private equity giant, and Selini Capital, a quant trading shop. Eightco Holdings and Susquehanna Crypto also chipped in. The group brings a mix of strategic and financial backers to the foundation's cap table.
What the funds buy
The foundation says the capital will go straight into Global World ID — its system for proving personhood online without handing over personal data. That means more integrations with apps, broader geographic reach, and the infrastructure to handle what the foundation expects will be a growing user base. World ID already lets people verify they're human using iris scans via Orb devices, but the project has faced privacy scrutiny and regulatory questions in some markets.
Why a token sale
Rather than a traditional equity round, the foundation sold WLD tokens directly to investors. That structure keeps the foundation's governance lean and aligns backers with the token's long-term value. It also avoids diluting the foundation's non-token funding. The $52.5 million figure is notable — it shows institutional appetite for identity-focused crypto projects, even as the broader market cycles through its usual ups and downs.
The timing isn't accidental. World ID has been rolling out in Latin America and parts of Asia, and the foundation is eyeing expansion into Africa next. The fresh capital should accelerate those plans. Whether regulators will keep pace with the technology is an open question — one the foundation will have to answer as it scales.
