The XRPL Foundation reported on July 8 that the network has processed 1 million agentic x402 payments — machine-initiated transactions that settle small amounts without any human involvement. The milestone comes just weeks before the Linux Foundation officially launches the x402 Foundation on July 14, a new steward for the payment protocol that counts Coinbase among its contributors.
What agentic x402 payments are
These are automated payments triggered by software agents, not people. A machine might pay a few cents for an API call, a data query, or a compute task. XRPL's low fees and fast finality make it a natural fit for micro-payments that would be uneconomical on other networks. The x402 protocol standardizes how those tiny, machine-to-machine payments work.
RippleX's growth projections
RippleX engineering expects the network to hit 10 million agentic transactions soon, with a path toward 100 million in a couple of years. That would represent a hundredfold increase from the current count, though the company didn't specify a timeline for the next milestone beyond "soon."
A public directory of live services
T54.ai launched the XRPL AI Hub, a public directory that currently lists 80 live x402 services. The directory gives developers and users a way to discover active endpoints that accept or initiate these automated payments. It's a practical step toward making the ecosystem visible and usable.
The x402 Foundation's role
The Linux Foundation will operate the x402 Foundation starting July 14. Its job is to steward the protocol, ensure it remains open, and coordinate contributions. Coinbase's involvement signals that at least one major exchange sees potential in the machine-payment standard. The foundation's launch formalizes governance that was previously handled informally by the XRPL Foundation and early contributors.
The 1 million payment mark is a snapshot from July 8. Whether the network can sustain the growth RippleX projects depends on how quickly developers build and deploy new agentic services — and whether the x402 Foundation can keep the protocol stable as volume climbs.
