XRP's August Curse: Four Years of Red as July Streak Ends

XRP's August Curse: Four Years of Red as July Streak Ends

XRP has closed July in the green for six consecutive years, but August has been a different story — four straight red months. Now, with the cryptocurrency stuck in a tight range and ETF demand fading, traders are watching whether history repeats or breaks.

July's Green Streak

Since 2020, July has been XRP's strongest month. The median return for July stands at +6.91%, the highest of any month. This year was no exception: XRP closed July 2026 in positive territory, extending the streak to six years. But the momentum that carried the token through July appears to be fading.

August's Red History

August tells a different story. The month has the flattest average return of any month at just +0.43%, and it has closed red for four consecutive years — the longest losing streak for any month. If that pattern holds, XRP could face headwinds in the weeks ahead.

ETF Flows and Exchange Data

Spot XRP ETF desks recorded zero flows on 10 of 17 trading days in July 2026. Net demand for the month was roughly $12.4 million against a fund complex of about $997 million. Daily ETF value traded fell from $14.05 million on July 1 to $8.80 million on July 24, a 37% drop. On exchanges, the net position change dropped from -205.1 million XRP on July 3 to -70.2 million XRP on July 26, a 66% decline. That suggests fewer traders are moving coins off exchanges, a sign of reduced conviction.

The $1.01–$1.22 Trap

Price action has been range-bound since late June. Support at $1.01 — the 1.618 Fibonacci extension — has held since late June 2026. Resistance at $1.22 has capped every attempt since XRP lost that level at the end of May 2026. Buying volume has fallen steadily since June 30, 2026, reinforcing the sideways pattern.

What It Would Take to Break Out

For a bullish breakout, XRP needs a three-day close above $1.22, a 10.42% move. Losing $1.01, a 7.95% drop, would open the door to renewed outflows. If sell volume remains thin, August's flat history suggests more range-bound trading rather than a breakdown. The next test is whether XRP can hold $1.01 support. If it does, August's flat average return points to more sideways action. If it breaks, the door opens to renewed outflows.
