OpenAI has quietly retired DALL-E image generation from ChatGPT, steering users toward its newer image models instead. The change, which took effect in recent days, means anyone who previously used DALL-E inside the chatbot now sees a different interface and a different set of capabilities.
Why DALL-E was removed
The company hasn't given a detailed public explanation, but the move appears to be part of a broader push to consolidate its product lineup. DALL-E, first launched in 2021, was the model that put AI image generation on the map. But newer systems, including the one powering ChatGPT's current image features, offer better resolution, faster generation, and tighter integration with the chatbot's conversational abilities. Keeping DALL-E as a separate option would have meant maintaining two parallel image pipelines, which complicates updates and slows down development.
What users are being offered
Instead of DALL-E, ChatGPT now uses a more advanced model that can generate images directly from chat prompts without needing a separate tool. The new system handles complex instructions better and produces fewer artifacts. But it also has a different visual style — some users have complained that the images look less artistic or more generic than DALL-E's output. For those who relied on DALL-E's specific aesthetic, the switch may feel like a downgrade.
Competitors see an opening
The retirement creates an opportunity for rivals. Midjourney, Adobe Firefly, and Stability AI all offer image generation tools that compete directly with what DALL-E used to provide. Some of these services have already started marketing themselves as alternatives for users who miss DALL-E's particular look. The timing is especially favorable for them because OpenAI's move comes at a moment when many creators are evaluating which AI tools to standardize on.
Unresolved questions
It's not clear whether OpenAI plans to bring back DALL-E as a standalone product or if the model will remain retired indefinitely. The company hasn't said whether existing DALL-E users will lose access to their previous generations or if those images remain available through other means. For now, anyone who wants to use DALL-E inside ChatGPT is out of luck — and the only option is to adapt to the newer system or look elsewhere.
