Coinbase and Bitget have signed on as the first cryptocurrency sponsors of the Esports World Cup (EWC) 2026. The deal puts two of the industry's largest exchanges behind a tournament that organizers hope will draw a global audience. The announcement comes as the Dota 2 esports scene faces a 24% drop in viewership year-over-year and a match-fixing scandal that has shaken the community.
The sponsorship deal
Coinbase and Bitget are the first crypto brands to back the Esports World Cup. Neither exchange disclosed the financial terms or the length of the partnership. The EWC, launched in 2024, has been expanding its sponsor roster beyond traditional gaming and energy-drink brands. Crypto firms have been eyeing esports as a way to reach younger, tech-savvy audiences — a demographic that overlaps heavily with crypto traders.
Why esports?
This isn't the first time crypto companies have bet on competitive gaming. Coinbase has sponsored esports teams before, and Bitget has backed tournaments in Asia. But the Esports World Cup is a relatively new property, and landing two crypto sponsors early gives the tournament a financial boost. For the exchanges, it's a chance to build brand recognition in a space where many potential users already spend their time.
Dota 2's rough year
The timing isn't great for Dota 2, one of the EWC's featured titles. Viewership for the game's pro circuit dropped 24% compared to last year. On top of that, a match-fixing scandal has rocked the scene, with several players and teams under investigation. The EWC hasn't commented on how the scandal might affect its Dota 2 competition, but the viewership decline is a headwind for any tournament organizer.
The Esports World Cup 2026 is scheduled to take place later this year in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Coinbase and Bitget will likely activate their sponsorships with on-site branding, fan experiences, and possibly crypto-based rewards for viewers.
