KeSPA Names Deft and Rascal as Analysts for Asian Games Squad

The Korean e-Sports Association has tapped Kim “Deft” Hyuk-kyu and Kim “Rascal” Kwang-hee as analysts for South Korea’s Asian Games esports squad. Both are former professional players with deep competitive experience — Deft is a world champion, and Rascal has played at the highest level in League of Legends. Their appointment comes as the country pushes to build a roster capable of winning gold at this year's continental event.

Why the roles matter

Analysts in esports break down opponent playstyles, draft strategies, and in-game trends. Having two well-known pros in those seats could sharpen the squad’s preparation. Deft and Rascal know the current meta and the top Chinese and Korean talent from the LCK. That inside knowledge might give South Korea an edge in a tournament where small margins decide medals.

The Asian Games carry weight beyond sport. In South Korea, a gold medal can earn able-bodied male athletes an exemption from the country’s mandatory 18-month military service. That rule already applies to traditional sports like soccer and baseball. For esports players, who often pause or end their careers to serve, a waiver would be a huge incentive.

Military exemption and esports

South Korea hasn’t yet granted military exemptions to esports athletes. But the government has signaled it’s open to the idea, especially if the national team performs well on a major stage like the Asian Games. By naming Deft and Rascal as analysts, KeSPA is betting that strong tactical support can improve the squad’s chances — and, down the line, make a case for service waivers for future players.

The analysts themselves won’t compete, so they won’t directly benefit. But if South Korea wins gold, the precedent could shift how the country treats its top esports talent. For now, the pressure is on the players and the coaching staff to deliver results.

The squad’s final roster hasn’t been announced. KeSPA is expected to name the players in the coming weeks. How Deft and Rascal shape that lineup and the team’s strategy will be closely watched by fans — and by young pros hoping their own military service might one day be waived.
