Valve is swapping out Overpass for Cache in the Active Duty map pool for Counter-Strike 2, the company confirmed. The change takes effect July 6 and marks the first map rotation since the game's full release.
Reason for the Rotation
Map rotations are part of Valve’s broader strategy to keep competitive play balanced and the community engaged. Overpass has been in the Active Duty pool for years, but its layout has drawn criticism from some professional players for being too CT-sided on certain rounds. Cache, a community-favorite map originally created by FMPONE, was previously in the pool before being removed in 2023 to undergo a visual overhaul for CS2. The updated version brings fresh textures and lighting but keeps the core layout intact.
Valve didn't provide a detailed explanation for the specific swap, but the timing aligns with the summer tournament season. Teams often rely on a stable map pool for practice, so mid-year changes force squads to adapt quickly.
What Cache Brings Back
Cache is known for its tight corridors and vertical play, especially around A site and the mid-to-B connector. It rewards utility usage and coordinated rushes. For players who missed the map, the return means relearning boost spots and smoke lineups, but the fundamentals remain the same. The reworked version also includes minor tweaks to balance—such as a wider opening at mid and adjusted cover near the B site—that should reduce the previous CT advantage.
The Active Duty pool now consists of seven maps: Mirage, Inferno, Dust II, Nuke, Ancient, Anubis, and Cache. Overpass moves to the reserve pool, where it can still appear in casual matches and third-party tournaments.
Community Reaction and Tournament Impact
Early reactions on social media are mixed. Some pros welcome the change, saying Cache’s return adds variety to a pool that has felt stale. Others worry about the loss of Overpass’s unique long-range engagements and the timing ahead of major events like IEM Cologne and the BLAST Premier Fall Groups. Teams that invested hours into Overpass strats now have to redistribute practice time.
Valve has not announced whether more maps will rotate out later this year. The company typically makes such decisions behind the scenes, with no public roadmap.
The new pool goes live on July 6. Players can test Cache now in competitive matchmaking, but official tournaments will adopt the updated list starting that day.
