Spain Held to Goalless Draw by Debutants Cape Verde in World Cup Opener

Spain’s World Cup campaign got off to a frustrating start on Monday as they were held to a 0-0 draw by tournament debutants Cape Verde. The result extended a recurring pattern of slow openings for La Roja on the biggest stage.

A debut to remember for Cape Verde

Cape Verde, appearing in their first ever World Cup, delivered a disciplined defensive performance to keep Spain at bay. The island nation, ranked 68th in the world, frustrated the 2010 champions with a compact shape and quick transitions. Goalkeeper Josimar Dias made several key saves, while the back line repelled wave after wave of Spanish pressure.

For Cape Verde, the point is a historic achievement. They become only the second African nation to avoid defeat in their World Cup debut, and they did it against a side that reached the semi-finals of the last European Championship.

Spain’s recurring opening-game struggles

Spain’s inability to break down a stubborn defense is nothing new. The team has a long-standing habit of stumbling out of the gates in major tournaments. In the 2014 World Cup, they lost 5-1 to the Netherlands. In 2018, they drew 3-3 with Portugal after leading. At Euro 2020, they needed a late goal to draw Sweden.

Monday’s stalemate follows that same script. Spain dominated possession – holding more than 70% of the ball – but lacked incision in the final third. Chances fell to Álvaro Morata and Pedri, but neither could find the net. Coach Luis de la Fuente made three substitutions in the second half, but the breakthrough never came.

What the draw means for Group A

The result leaves both teams with one point in Group A. Spain now face a must-win match against Mexico on Friday, while Cape Verde take on South Korea. With only the top two advancing, Spain cannot afford another slip-up. Their next opponent, Mexico, beat South Korea 2-1 in the other group game, meaning Spain sit third on goal difference.

The pressure is on. Spain have not failed to reach the knockout stage since 1998. But after this draw, that streak is suddenly in doubt.
