Upbit Moves 864 Billion SHIB in Internal Wallet Rebalancing

South Korean crypto exchange Upbit shifted 864 billion SHIB tokens between its own wallets on Wednesday, according to blockchain data from Arkham Intelligence. The transfer came after Shiba Inu’s price had rallied 36% over the previous week. The movement was split into 384 billion SHIB leaving one wallet and 480 billion SHIB arriving at another — a pattern that analysts say points to internal rebalancing, not a market dump.

The scale of the transfer

At current prices, 864 billion SHIB is worth roughly $18 million. The two transactions occurred within a short window, with the outbound and inbound amounts nearly matching. That kind of symmetry is typical when an exchange reorganizes funds across cold storage, hot wallets, or trading reserves. Upbit, one of the largest exchanges by volume, regularly moves large sums for operational reasons.

Why the timing matters

The transfer followed a sharp 36% rally in SHIB’s price. Such moves often trigger speculation that a whale or exchange is about to sell. But the data suggests otherwise. The inbound wallet received slightly more than the outbound one sent, which could indicate a consolidation of funds rather than a liquidation. The article from the News Desk, edited by Samuel Rae, explicitly warns that large exchange wallet movements are frequently misinterpreted because internal wallets are not always properly labeled on public block explorers.

A common misunderstanding

When a big chunk of tokens moves from one address to another, retail traders often assume a sell-off is coming. But exchanges routinely shift coins between wallets for security, liquidity management, or system upgrades. Without knowing which addresses belong to the exchange, outsiders can mistake a routine rebalancing for a bearish signal. Arkham Intelligence, which tracks labeled wallets, flagged this particular transfer as internal.

The SHIB price did not show any unusual volatility immediately after the move, lending weight to the rebalancing explanation. The token was trading around $0.000021 at the time of writing, roughly flat on the day.

For now, the question remains whether other large holders will follow Upbit’s lead — or whether the rally that preceded this transfer has further to run.
