Trade.xyz has started reimbursing users hit by a pricing error in its SKHYNIX perpetual futures contract. The incident, which disrupted trading on the platform, exposed a weak link in how synthetic equity derivatives rely on outside data feeds.
What went wrong with SKHYNIX
The SKHYNIX perpetual futures contract is a synthetic product that tracks the value of an underlying equity index. On the day of the glitch, the price feed from an external oracle system delivered incorrect data. That caused the contract to trade at a sharp discount to the real index, triggering a wave of liquidations and margin calls.
Users who held positions during the faulty pricing period saw their accounts hit. Trade.xyz paused trading on SKHYNIX within minutes, but the damage was done. The company later confirmed that the error originated from the oracle, not from its own matching engine.
How Trade.xyz is making users whole
In a notice posted to its website, Trade.xyz said it has begun processing compensation for all affected accounts. The company calculated the difference between the erroneous price and the correct index value at the time of each trade. Users are receiving the difference in USDC, the platform's primary stablecoin.
Trade.xyz did not disclose the total payout or the number of users impacted. The compensation process is ongoing, and the company said it expects to complete all reimbursements within two weeks.
The SKHYNIX incident is the latest reminder that synthetic derivatives are only as reliable as the data they depend on. Oracles — the services that feed real-world prices onto blockchains — have been a known point of failure in decentralized finance. But this case involves a centralized platform using an external oracle, blurring the line between DeFi and traditional finance.
The event has pushed the industry to reconsider how oracles are selected and monitored. Some platforms now use multiple oracles and cross-check their data. Others are exploring on-chain price discovery to reduce reliance on external feeds. Trade.xyz has not said whether it will change its oracle provider or add redundancy.
For now, the company is focused on making users whole. The broader question — how to prevent a similar glitch from happening again — remains open.
