AMD is pouring $5 billion into Anthropic to build out AI infrastructure, with a target of 2 gigawatts of computing capacity by 2027. The investment marks one of the largest single commitments by a chipmaker to an AI startup, signaling AMD's push to compete in the fast-growing market for training and running large language models.
The $5 billion bet on AI compute
The money will go toward data centers and hardware needed to support Anthropic's AI workloads. AMD, which has been gaining ground on Nvidia in the AI chip space, is positioning itself as a key supplier for the company behind the Claude chatbot. The deal gives AMD a major customer for its Instinct GPUs and other AI accelerators, while Anthropic gets guaranteed access to the computing power it needs to train ever-larger models.
Neither company disclosed the exact breakdown of the investment, but it includes both cash and in-kind contributions of AMD hardware. The partnership is expected to span several years, with the 2GW target representing a massive scale-up from Anthropic's current infrastructure.
Targeting 2 gigawatts of capacity
Two gigawatts is roughly the power consumption of two large nuclear reactors or about 1.5 million homes. For context, that level of compute would allow Anthropic to train models many times larger than today's frontier systems. The company has been vocal about the need for more compute to achieve its goal of building safe, advanced AI.
AMD's investment comes as the AI industry faces a global shortage of data center capacity and high-end chips. By locking in a long-term partnership, Anthropic aims to avoid the bottlenecks that have slowed competitors. The deal also gives AMD a showcase for its hardware in the most demanding AI workloads, potentially helping it win more enterprise customers.
Valuation speculation and prediction markets
The investment has fueled speculation about Anthropic's valuation. A popular prediction market now gives an 81.5% probability that the company will be worth $1.25 trillion by the end of this year. That would make Anthropic one of the most valuable private companies in the world, rivaling the likes of SpaceX and ByteDance.
Such a valuation would represent a massive return for AMD and other early investors. Anthropic was valued at around $18 billion in its last funding round in late 2023. The prediction market's odds suggest that investors believe the company's revenue and strategic importance could skyrocket as AI adoption accelerates.
Whether that bet pays off depends on Anthropic's ability to deliver on its technical roadmap and fend off competition from OpenAI, Google, and Meta. The 2GW infrastructure target by 2027 is an ambitious milestone that will require flawless execution and continued access to capital.
For now, AMD's investment gives Anthropic a powerful backer and a clear path to scale. The clock is ticking toward 2027, and the prediction market's deadline of December 31 will test whether the hype matches reality.
