BloombergNEF's projection, released this week, marks a dramatic leap from current levels. Data center power demand has been climbing steadily, driven by cloud computing and the explosion of generative AI. But the new figure underscores just how much strain the grid is likely to face in the next decade. Utilities are already scrambling to build new generation capacity and upgrade transmission lines.
Why miners are moving
Bitcoin miners have spent years securing cheap power contracts and building out cooling systems for their rigs. That infrastructure is almost identical to what's needed for AI training and inference. So instead of just running ASICs to hash blocks, many operators are now retrofitting their facilities to host GPU clusters for AI startups and enterprise clients. The pivot isn't just opportunistic — it's survival. The last Bitcoin halving in 2024 squeezed margins, and AI workloads offer a much more stable revenue stream than volatile crypto prices.
What this means for the grid
The crossover creates a new tension. Crypto mining has long been criticized for wasting energy on proof-of-work, while data centers are seen as essential economic infrastructure.
