The company, known for its gravity-based energy storage systems, is now building a campus that repurposes those sites into lucrative data centers. The move comes as AI companies scramble for reliable, large-scale power sources. Energy Vault's existing sites already have grid connections and permits, giving them a head start over greenfield projects.

Texas was chosen for its business-friendly climate and robust energy infrastructure. The campus will tap into the state's competitive electricity market, which can offer lower costs for high-volume users. Energy Vault hasn't disclosed the exact location or the campus's total power capacity.

Why AI Needs Energy Storage Sites

AI data centers consume enormous amounts of electricity — far more than traditional server farms. Training a single large language model can use as much power as hundreds of homes in a year. That's pushing developers to look for sites that can deliver 100 megawatts or more without long waits for grid upgrades.

Energy Vault's existing storage sites already have that infrastructure. By adding computing hardware instead of more batteries, the company can generate revenue faster than waiting for new energy storage contracts. The campus will host both AI training and inference workloads, though specific customers haven't been named.

What's Already Underway

Construction crews are on site, and the first phase is expected to come online within months. Energy Vault is handling the design and build-out itself, rather than partnering with a traditional data center developer. That keeps more control — and more profit — in-house.
