Google Fi is rolling out a set of upgraded international travel features for its top-tier subscribers, bringing expanded 5G coverage, built-in VPN access, and what the company calls seamless connectivity to Unlimited Premium plan users. The move targets frequent travelers who rely on their phones abroad for work and personal use.
What Unlimited Premium users get
The new features bundle three improvements. First, expanded 5G coverage means faster data speeds in more international destinations, though Google has not specified which countries are included. Second, the built-in VPN provides an extra layer of security on public Wi-Fi networks at airports, hotels, and cafes. Third, the company promises seamless connectivity — essentially smoother handoffs between cellular and Wi-Fi networks as users move across borders. The features work automatically once the Unlimited Premium plan is active.
Who qualifies
These perks are exclusive to subscribers of Google Fi's Unlimited Premium plan. That plan already offers unlimited data, calls, and texts in the US and 200-plus countries, but the international component previously lacked the 5G boost and VPN access now being added. Users on other Fi plans — including Flexible and Unlimited Plus — do not get these specific upgrades.
Why the VPN and 5G matter for travelers
The VPN addition is a notable one. Many travelers use hotel or airport Wi-Fi, which can be insecure. Having a VPN built directly into the carrier's network removes the need for a separate app or subscription. Meanwhile, the expanded 5G coverage could make a real difference for people who need to upload photos, join video calls, or navigate maps abroad. Google Fi's network already roams on local carriers, and the upgrade means those connections will tap into 5G where available, not just 4G LTE.
