Nvidia and SK Group announced a $500 billion joint push into AI data centers this week, a deal that brings next-generation memory chips into the picture — and has immediate implications for crypto mining. The scale of the investment, spread over multiple years, is one of the largest private-sector commitments to AI infrastructure to date.
The deal in numbers
The partnership pairs Nvidia's GPU architecture with SK Group's memory manufacturing muscle. The $500 billion figure covers construction of new data centers, research and development, and production of advanced memory modules. SK Group, parent of chipmaker SK Hynix, will focus on high-bandwidth memory (HBM) — the kind that AI data centers need, and that mining rigs increasingly rely on for high-speed processing.
Any shift in HBM supply chains ripples through the mining sector. Mining-specific hardware, especially ASICs and high-end GPUs, competes directly with AI data centers for the same memory components. If this deal locks up a meaningful portion of SK Group's HBM output for Nvidia's AI customers, miners could face tighter supply and longer lead times for the latest chips. The timing isn't great — many operations were already struggling to source new gear after the 2025 bull run.
Memory technology in play
SK Group has been developing HBM4, the next leap in memory bandwidth. The partnership puts those chips into Nvidia's data center designs from the start. For crypto mining, that means future mining rigs built on Nvidia silicon will likely use the same memory modules as AI servers — tying availability even more closely to data center demand. That's a double-edged sword: better performance, but potentially worse availability.
What comes next
The first phase of construction is expected to break ground in the fourth quarter of 2026, with initial data centers coming online in 2027. Miners watching the HBM market will be keeping an eye on SK Group's allocation decisions — and any secondary market for the chips after data center deployment. The question no one can answer yet: whether the deal ultimately expands total chip supply or simply shifts it further toward AI.
