OpenAI announced Project Camellia this week, a $20 billion AI data center campus in Georgia that will span 1,400 acres and consume 3.2 gigawatts of power. The project, one of the largest of its kind, has implications for decentralized technologies at the intersection of crypto and AI — from energy competition with miners to the future of blockchain-based compute networks.

A campus built for scale

The facility will be built on a site roughly the size of 1,000 football fields. Its 3.2 GW power draw is enough to supply hundreds of thousands of homes. OpenAI said the campus will support training and inference for next-generation AI models, though it didn't disclose a timeline for construction or a specific location within Georgia.

That much power doesn't go unnoticed by the crypto mining industry. Miners have long scouted Georgia for its relatively cheap electricity and business-friendly policies. A single 3.2 GW load could strain local grid capacity and push up industrial power prices, making it harder for smaller mining operations to compete. Some miners have already pivoted to offering AI compute services — Project Camellia could accelerate that trend or squeeze them out entirely.

Decentralized AI in the shadow of a giant

OpenAI's massive centralized infrastructure stands in contrast to the ethos of decentralized AI projects that rely on distributed compute networks. Those networks, which let users rent out GPU time on a peer-to-peer basis, have gained traction as an alternative to big cloud providers. A $20 billion campus doesn't kill that model, but it raises the bar for what it takes to compete on raw scale. The question is whether decentralized networks can offer something the giant can't — privacy, censorship resistance, or lower costs for niche workloads.

The energy question

Georgia's grid will need to absorb 3.2 GW of new demand. That's a lot, even for a state that has courted data centers. Regulators and utilities will have to figure out where the power comes from, how much new transmission is needed, and whether the facility will be required to pair with renewable generation. For crypto miners already operating in the state, the answer could determine their own bottom line.

Project Camellia is expected to break ground in 2027, with initial operations targeted for 2028. How Georgia's grid and local regulators handle the power demand will be closely watched by both the AI and crypto industries.
