Tesla has deployed unsupervised robotaxis across the entire Austin metropolitan area. The company's autonomous vehicles are now operating without a human driver behind the wheel, offering rides to passengers in the region. The rollout covers the full Austin metro, not just a limited zone.
How the service works
The robotaxis run without any safety driver or remote operator on board. Passengers can hail a ride through the company's platform, though Tesla hasn't disclosed specific pickup and drop-off procedures. The vehicles rely solely on their onboard sensors and software to navigate streets and traffic. Tesla says the system is designed to handle a wide range of road conditions, from busy downtown streets to suburban neighborhoods.
Coverage area
The service covers the entire Austin metro area. That includes downtown, surrounding suburbs, and the broader region of about 40 miles across. Tesla's decision to deploy across the whole metro at once sets it apart from other autonomous vehicle pilots that often start with small, geofenced zones. Austin residents can now book rides anywhere within that boundary.
Tesla has not announced plans for expansion into other cities. The company is focused on getting the Austin operation running smoothly before considering next steps.
