Threads Crosses 500 Million Monthly Active Users

Threads has surpassed 500 million monthly active users, the social platform announced. The milestone marks a rapid climb for the app, which launched less than two years ago.

A new user threshold

Hitting the half-billion mark places Threads among the largest social networks by active user count. The platform had previously reported 300 million monthly users in early 2024 and 400 million by midyear. The latest figure reflects continued adoption, particularly in markets outside the U.S.

What drove the growth

The company attributed the increase to product updates, including a web version, improved search, and trending topics. Integration with Instagram, which already has more than 2 billion users, also helped drive sign-ups. Threads has added features like direct messaging and a following feed that users had requested.

Competition in the microblogging space

Threads positions itself as a text-first alternative to other short-form platforms. Its growth comes as rival X, formerly Twitter, has seen user numbers plateau after a series of policy changes. Threads has also benefited from a wave of users looking for a less politicized environment.

The platform still faces challenges. Engagement per user remains lower than on some competitors, and advertisers have been cautious. Threads has not yet launched a full ad system, though testing is underway in select markets.

What’s next

Threads is working on a dedicated timeline for breaking news and a better algorithm for recommendations. The company has not set a target for the next user milestone but says it is focused on retention and daily active usage.
