Why the uncertainty is different this time
Since March 2020, nearly every Fed meeting had about 99% agreement on the outcome beforehand. That consensus has shattered. Chairman Kevin Warsh has reduced the Fed's reliance on forward guidance — June meeting minutes discussed shortening the statement and removing directional language. That leaves markets guessing.
A Reuters survey of over 100 forecasters found more than three-quarters predict no policy shift until the end of 2026. But softer-than-expected June inflation data and a weakening labor market give the Fed room to hold. Still, inflation remains above the 2% target, and risks from tariffs, geopolitical tension, and energy markets persist. Several Fed officials have become more open to raising rates if inflation doesn't improve.
