A Japanese logistics company is weighing the use of the JPYC stablecoin to pay its network of transportation contractors. The move would let thousands of drivers receive digital yen payments more frequently and with less delay than traditional bank transfers.
Why stablecoins for logistics
The company is exploring whether JPYC can offer faster settlement times for its drivers. Many of the firm's contractors are independent operators who often wait days or weeks for payment after completing deliveries. A stablecoin-based system could cut that wait to minutes or even seconds, improving cash flow for drivers who rely on steady income.
JPYC is a Japanese yen stablecoin issued by JPYC Inc. It maintains a 1:1 peg to the yen and runs on multiple blockchain networks. That means transfers can happen around the clock, including weekends and holidays when traditional banking systems are closed.
How the payment system would work
Under the proposed plan, the logistics company would convert yen into JPYC tokens and distribute them to drivers' digital wallets. Drivers could then either hold the stablecoin, convert it back to fiat currency, or use it for purchases where accepted. The company has not disclosed which blockchain platform it would use or whether it would build its own wallet app.
The shift to digital yen payments is part of a broader trend in Japan's logistics sector, where companies are looking for ways to streamline operations and attract drivers amid a labor shortage. Faster payments are one tool to improve contractor satisfaction and retention.
The logistics firm is still evaluating the technology and regulatory implications. Japan's Financial Services Agency has issued guidelines for stablecoins, and any large-scale payroll use would need to comply with those rules.
