London Stock Exchange to Launch Overnight Trading Venue by Early 2027, Citing Crypto Competition

The London Stock Exchange is planning to launch a separate overnight trading venue in the first half of 2027. The move is designed to extend market access for investors and is partly driven by competition from cryptocurrency markets, which never close.

Why overnight?

Traditional stock exchanges have long operated on a fixed schedule — typically 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. local time. But crypto markets trade 24/7, and that's been pulling liquidity and attention away from standard hours. The LSE's new venue would let institutional investors trade during the night, matching the flexibility that digital asset traders already enjoy.

What the venue will look like

The exchange plans to run the overnight platform as a separate entity, not an extension of its main market. That means separate rules, separate clearing, and likely a different set of participants. The goal is to offer a regulated environment for after-hours trading — something the U.S. has with platforms like Blue Ocean, but Europe largely lacks.

Competition from crypto

This isn't the first time a traditional exchange has felt the heat from crypto. The LSE itself has been dipping into digital assets, including a 2023 partnership with GlobalX to list crypto-focused ETFs. But the overnight venue is a direct acknowledgement that the 9-to-5 model is losing relevance. “We're responding to what the market wants,” the LSE said in a statement — though that's the only quote available.

The LSE plans to give more details in the coming months, including which securities will be available and how settlement will work. The venue is expected to go live by the end of the first half of 2027. For now, the exchange is focused on getting regulatory approval from the FCA — and on convincing traders that a regulated night shift beats the Wild West of crypto.
