New data paints a grim picture for recent crypto token launches. Of all tokens that held a token generation event (TGE) since the start of 2024, a staggering 92.9% are now trading below their initial offering price. Just 7.1% have managed to stay in the black.
The numbers behind the slump
The figures cover roughly two and a half years of launches — from January 2024 through mid-2026. That means nearly every token that hit the market in that window has lost value relative to its TGE price. The data doesn't break down by sector or chain, but the aggregate number is hard to ignore.
For context, a token's TGE price is the first price at which it becomes tradable, often set during a private sale or public offering. Trading below that level means early buyers are underwater — and later buyers aren't faring any better.
For teams planning a token launch, the odds are brutally clear. A 7.1% success rate isn't just low — it's a warning. The market is flooded with supply, and demand hasn't kept up. Many projects that raised millions in 2024 and 2025 are now watching their tokens trade at fractions of the initial valuation.
That doesn't mean every token is a dud. The 7.1% that are up include some notable names, but the data doesn't name them. The broader takeaway: launching a token is no longer a guaranteed path to liquidity or community growth.
Investor reality check
For retail investors, the numbers reinforce a tough lesson. Buying into a TGE — whether through a launchpad, an exchange listing, or a direct sale — carries enormous risk. The vast majority of tokens simply don't hold their value after the initial hype fades.
Some of that is market mechanics: early investors and team members often unlock tokens over time, creating selling pressure. But the scale of the underperformance suggests deeper issues — oversaturation, weak tokenomics, or projects that never found product-market fit.
The data covers launches through mid-2026. The next batch of tokens — those hitting the market in the second half of the year — will face the same headwinds. Whether any of them can beat the 7.1% odds is an open question. No one is calling a bottom on token performance yet.
