Why Programmable Wallets Matter
AI agents don't just process payments. They negotiate terms, split bills, and execute microtransactions in real time. Standard payment rails weren't built for that. Programmable wallets give these agents the ability to hold and move funds autonomously, following rules set by their human operators. That's a big departure from today's manual approval workflows.
The key is flexibility. A programmable wallet can release payment only when a delivery is confirmed, or split a single invoice across multiple parties without human intervention. For enterprises running dozens or hundreds of AI agents, that kind of automation cuts costs and speeds up operations.
Scaling Agentic Commerce
Agentic commerce — where AI agents buy and sell on behalf of businesses — is still in its early days. But the infrastructure is catching up. Programmable wallet layers sit between the agent and the payment network, handling authentication, compliance, and fund management. They're designed to work with existing bank accounts and card networks while adding a layer of programmability.
Without these wallets, each agent would need its own bank account or card, which doesn't scale. With them, a single wallet can manage thousands of agents, each with its own spending rules and limits. That's what makes agentic commerce viable for large enterprises.
Banks and payment processors are watching closely. Some are already testing programmable wallet APIs. The goal is to let businesses deploy AI agents without rebuilding their payment infrastructure from scratch. But adoption depends on trust — enterprises need to know the wallets are secure and compliant.
Regulators haven't weighed in yet. That could slow things down. For now, the technology is ready, but the rules aren't. How quickly enterprises will adopt these programmable layers remains an open question.
