Bitcoin Must Reclaim $88,880 to Confirm Bottom, On-Chain Data Shows

Bitcoin needs to reclaim and hold $88,880 before a market bottom can be confirmed, according to on-chain data from CryptoQuant. At the time of analysis the asset was trading near $80,250 — still well below several key cost-basis levels held by large holder cohorts. The data suggests that without a sustained move above that threshold, the recovery from February's low may be just a bear-market bounce.

The $88,880 threshold

The level comes from the average cost basis of holders who bought Bitcoin between three and six months ago. That cohort is underwater right now, and until they break even or better, the market lacks a solid foundation. CryptoQuant analyst IT Tech put it bluntly: bottom calls are narratives, while reclaiming and holding $88,880 is data.

Three cohorts in the red

It's not just the 3-6 month holders. Two older groups are even deeper in the red. The 12-18 month cohort has a cost basis of $93,400, and the 6-12 month group sits at $111,800. That means a large chunk of the market is holding bags that are currently worth less than what they paid. For a genuine bottom to form, those holders need to either sell at a loss or see prices climb back above their entries.

Recovery so far

Bitcoin fell to roughly $60,000 in February — a 52% drop from its all-time high of $126,200. Since then it has recovered about 37% without setting a new low. Sentiment has improved dramatically, too. The Fear and Greed Index was at a near-maximum fear reading of 5 in February; by early May it had climbed to 47, which is neutral. That shift shows traders are less panicked, but neutral isn't bullish.

What the data says

The on-chain picture is clear even if the narrative around a bottom is fuzzy. IT Tech's point is that anyone can call a bottom, but the data gives a specific target. Until Bitcoin clears $88,880 on strong volume and holds it, the market is still in no-man's land. The next few weeks will show whether the recovery has legs or if it's just another head fake.
