Coinbase Launches Platform for AI Agents to Trade Crypto Autonomously

Coinbase today launched Coinbase for Agents, a platform that lets AI assistants like ChatGPT and Claude trade crypto, access account data, and make payments on behalf of users. The move puts crypto trading directly inside conversations with AI.

AI as financial agent

The platform gives an AI assistant read and write permissions to a user's Coinbase account once the user authorizes it. The agent can then execute trades, check balances, or send payments based on natural language commands. Coinbase says the user stays in control — permissions are set ahead of time and the AI operates within those boundaries. The exchange built the integration on top of its existing API infrastructure.

Which models are supported

At launch, Coinbase for Agents supports OpenAI's ChatGPT and Anthropic's Claude. Both are among the most widely used consumer AI assistants. Coinbase says it plans to add more models over time. The selection suggests the exchange is targeting the mass market early.

Available now

The service is live as of today. Coinbase customers in supported regions can enable it through their account settings. The exchange hasn't said which regions are included, but typical Coinbase markets are expected. This isn't a beta — it's a production rollout.

Coinbase for Agents is the first product from the exchange that directly connects AI chatbots to financial action. The timing isn't accidental. AI assistants are moving from answering questions to taking actions, and crypto makes for a natural test case.
