Ethereum Foundation Spinout EthSystems Targets Bank Privacy Infrastructure

EthSystems, a startup spun out of the Ethereum Foundation, is building privacy infrastructure for banks and financial institutions. The company, which emerged from the foundation's research arm earlier this year, aims to give traditional finance a way to use Ethereum-based networks without exposing sensitive transaction data.

What EthSystems is building

The startup is developing a suite of tools that let banks and other regulated entities run private transactions on public blockchains. Think zero-knowledge proofs and encrypted mempools — but packaged for compliance teams. EthSystems hasn't released a product yet, but the pitch is straightforward: institutions want the efficiency of blockchain settlement without the glass-house transparency that comes with it.

Privacy has been a sticking point for institutional crypto adoption for years. Banks can't have their entire trade book visible on a public ledger. EthSystems is betting that the Ethereum Foundation's research pedigree — the same group that helped pioneer zk-rollups — gives it an edge in solving that problem. The spinout structure also lets the startup move faster than a foundation project could.

EthSystems is expected to announce a pilot program with a European bank later this quarter. The company is also hiring engineers with experience in zero-knowledge cryptography and financial compliance. No token or fundraising details have been disclosed.
