Galaxy is putting up to $5 million into a project to prepare Bitcoin for the quantum computing threat. The investment firm announced the commitment on Tuesday, as researchers, exchanges, and the U.S. government keep warning that 'Q-Day' — the moment a quantum computer can break public-key cryptography — could arrive as soon as 2030.
Why Bitcoin is vulnerable
Bitcoin's security relies on the Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm (ECDSA). A sufficiently powerful quantum computer could theoretically crack that algorithm, letting an attacker forge signatures and steal funds from any wallet that has ever broadcast a transaction. The network's proof-of-work is also at risk, but the signature problem is the more immediate concern. Galaxy's funding will go toward designing and testing a post-quantum signature scheme that Bitcoin could adopt without a contentious hard fork.
The $5 million plan
The money isn't a lump sum — Galaxy said it will allocate up to that amount over time, covering research, developer bounties, and open-source audits. The firm is working with a small group of cryptographers and Bitcoin Core contributors, though it hasn't named them publicly. The goal is to produce a draft proposal by the end of 2027. That's a tight timeline given the scale of the change: replacing the core signature scheme on a network that processes billions of dollars daily and has no formal governance structure.
Q-Day warnings pile up
The U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has been standardizing post-quantum algorithms since 2024, and several exchanges have started internal audits of their own key infrastructure. The common estimate among researchers is that a cryptographically relevant quantum computer could exist between 2030 and 2035. Galaxy's move is one of the first concrete, private-sector investments aimed specifically at Bitcoin's vulnerability, rather than a general quantum-research grant.
The timing isn't accidental. The longer the industry waits, the harder the transition becomes — old UTXOs with exposed public keys could be scooped up the moment a quantum machine goes online. Galaxy's bet is that a few million dollars now can save billions later.
What happens next: The firm plans to publish a technical roadmap later this year. The broader Bitcoin community will then have to decide whether to adopt the proposed changes — a process that could take years, if it happens at all.
