GnosisDAO Approves ZK Rollup Transition for Gnosis Chain

GnosisDAO has approved GIP-153, giving Gnosis Chain a governance mandate to transition into a ZK-proven Ethereum rollup. The proposal, which passed with 123,158 GNO voting in favor, sets a target genesis window of late 2026 or early 2027. It's a directional vote, not an immediate technical deployment.

What the mandate means

The proposal lays out a path for Gnosis Chain to become part of an 'Ethereum Economic Zone', settling on Ethereum and inheriting its security. Gas would remain paid in xDAI under the proposed transition, a detail that keeps the current fee structure intact for users.

The vote also unlocks approximately 350,000 staked GNO. That's a significant amount of capital that had been locked in the network's consensus layer, and it gives the DAO more flexibility as it moves forward.

What it doesn't mean

This is a governance mandate, not a switch that flips overnight. Implementation will require engineering, testing, and coordination across the ecosystem. The timeline to late 2026 or early 2027 leaves room for that work.

The distinction matters. A mandate gives the team and the community a clear direction, but the hard part — actually building and shipping a ZK rollup — is still ahead.

Gnosis Chain has long positioned itself as a fast, cheap sidechain with a strong focus on stablecoins and payments. Moving to a ZK rollup architecture would change its security model, tying it directly to Ethereum's settlement layer.

For a chain that has historically been a testbed for Ethereum-aligned experiments, this is a big step. But the real test will be execution — whether the engineering can match the ambition.

The next concrete milestone is the engineering and testing phase, with the target genesis window now set for late 2026 or early 2027. Whether that timeline holds will depend on how smoothly the transition work goes.
