Lightning Labs has released Wavelength, a non-custodial API toolkit designed to let developers plug Lightning Network payments into applications and AI agents without holding users' funds. The toolkit, announced Tuesday, aims to lower the barrier for integrating Bitcoin's second-layer payment system into everything from chatbots to e-commerce platforms.
What Wavelength offers
Wavelength provides a set of application programming interfaces that handle the technical heavy lifting of Lightning payments. Developers can send and receive payments, manage invoices, and check channel balances — all without running their own Lightning node or managing private keys. The toolkit is non-custodial, meaning the developer never takes control of the user's bitcoin. Instead, the user retains ownership of their funds throughout the transaction flow.
Lightning Labs, the company behind the Lightning Network implementation LND, built Wavelength to abstract away the complexity of node management. The company says the toolkit is aimed at developers who want to add Lightning payments but lack the infrastructure or expertise to run a full node.
Why non-custodial matters
In many existing Lightning integrations, the service provider holds the user's bitcoin in a custodial wallet. That setup introduces counterparty risk — if the provider gets hacked or goes under, users can lose their money. Wavelength's non-custodial design means the user's keys stay with the user, and payments are routed through the Lightning Network without the intermediary ever touching the funds.
This approach aligns with the broader ethos of Bitcoin self-custody. It also opens up use cases where trust is a concern, such as micropayments for AI agents or peer-to-peer transactions in decentralized apps.
One of the more notable applications is for AI agents — autonomous programs that can perform tasks on behalf of a user. With Wavelength, an AI agent could be given a budget of bitcoin and then pay for APIs, data feeds, or compute resources as needed, all over Lightning. The agent would handle the payment logic via the toolkit, while the user retains full control of the funds.
This could streamline machine-to-machine payments, where small, frequent transactions are common. Lightning's fast settlement and low fees make it a natural fit, and Wavelength removes the need for the agent to hold its own keys.
Availability and next steps
Wavelength is available now as a developer preview. Lightning Labs has published documentation and sample code on its website. Developers can start experimenting with the toolkit in test environments before deploying to mainnet.
The company has not announced a timeline for a full production release. But with the toolkit now public, the next step is for the developer community to build integrations and provide feedback. Lightning Labs is likely watching closely to see which use cases gain traction — especially those involving AI agents, which remain a nascent but fast-growing area.
