Standard Chartered's SC Ventures Takes Stake in Market Maker GSR

Standard Chartered’s investment arm SC Ventures became the first outside shareholder in crypto market maker GSR this week, ending 13 years of independence for the 2013-founded firm. The strategic partnership announced May 4 signals deepening institutional confidence in crypto infrastructure, with both sides zeroing in on tokenization as the entry point for traditional finance.

Thirteen Years Without Outside Money

GSR operated as a privately held entity since its founding. No financial terms were disclosed for SC Ventures’ stake, which breaks a run of independence stretching back to the early days of crypto. The firm had never taken outside investment before this deal.

Pre-Existing Ties Through Libeara

Before SC Ventures invested in GSR, the two had connected via Libeara. GSR had previously taken a stake in the tokenization platform that SC Ventures backs. This shared history paved the way for the partnership announced earlier this month.

Tokenization as Ground Zero

GSR CEO Xin Song and SC Ventures CEO Alex Manson both called tokenization the critical starting point for institutional adoption of digital assets. They see it as the bridge that brings real-world assets onto blockchains without overhauling existing finance systems. The firms have kept quiet about specific projects but made the focus clear.

Banking’s Crypto Playbook Expanding

Standard Chartered has backed Ripple before, and its SC Ventures unit now moves deeper into infrastructure. JPMorgan Chase and BNY Mellon are also pushing further into crypto services. What sets GSR apart is how long it stayed independent before accepting a bank affiliate’s capital. The firm’s reluctance to bring on outside backing for over a decade made this deal stand out.

With no timeline for joint initiatives given, the next concrete step will be the first tokenized asset announcement under this partnership. Until then, the market watches for what GSR and SC Ventures build together.
