Storj Files for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy, Proposes Token-to-Equity Swap

Storj, a decentralized data storage company, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy this week, extending a string of crypto failures. The company's token, STORJ, dropped 16% following the announcement. In an unusual move, Storj proposed that token holders receive equity in the restructured business — a structure rarely seen in bankruptcy proceedings.

STORJ slides 16%

The token's decline came fast after the filing hit the wires. STORJ had been trading in a narrow range for weeks, but the bankruptcy news erased roughly a sixth of its market value in hours. The drop adds to a rough stretch for crypto assets tied to companies facing financial distress.

A novel restructuring plan

Storj's proposal to swap token holdings for equity in the reorganized company is the kind of arrangement that bankruptcy lawyers will be watching closely. Typically, token holders are treated as unsecured creditors — or get nothing at all. Here, Storj is offering them a stake in the business going forward, a structure that could set a precedent if the court approves it. The company said it believes the plan gives token holders a fair recovery while allowing the business to shed debt and continue operating.

Operations continue

Storj stated that its operations will continue during the bankruptcy process. That means the network stays live, and customers shouldn't see interruptions. The company is betting that a leaner balance sheet and a token-holder base turned equity owners will keep the platform running while it works through court supervision.

The bankruptcy court will need to sign off on the token-to-equity plan, and that process could take months. Creditors and token holders will get a chance to weigh in. For now, Storj joins a growing list of crypto firms that have sought court protection this year — and its proposal could become a template for how distressed projects handle their token communities.
